We Will Not Be Shushed
This week on This Pod Is Your Pod we go behind the scenes at Pantsuit Nation and talk about how it all started, from a tiny office at a rural school in Maine. We get into the backstory of our own group a bit and then have a chance to talk with Lola Omalola, the founder of Female IN (FIN), a 1,000,000+ member Facebook Group "focused on building compassion, providing support, and nurturing the power of self-expression in a culture where women are meant to be seen and not heard." Lola describes the genesis of FIN, what she's learned about herself as the creator and steward of this huge and dynamic community, and why breaking a culture of silence is not just a matter of women's ability to thrive, but also a matter of life or death in many cases.
I also found out from Cortney that it was a Hamilton ticket snafu that finally made her break down on November 9, and our Cat Call this week is all about the national day of action planned for this Saturday, July 29. VisitOur Lives On The Line to learn more and find an event near you, use #OurLives on Saturday to tell your story about how the ACA has made a difference in your life, and keep calling your Members of Congress to tell them to oppose any GOP efforts to take health care away from millions of Americans.
This week's Golden Pantsuit went to our shero, Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI), who had surgery last month after being diagnosed with kidney cancer in May. And yet, badass that she is, stood with bullhorn in hand after Tuesday's motion to proceed (where a certain other senator with a recent diagnosis was in the limelight), speaking up for the tens of millions of Americans that are relying on the ACA.
Thank you, Senator Hirono!
Finally, after the president's shameful and bigoted tweet on Wednesday morning, we reaffirm that trans rights are human rights and that no transgender person is a burden, least of all those who choose to sacrifice their own lives to protect our freedoms. To all of our transgender listeners, readers, and community members, we love you and we see you. The president does not speak for us.
