Why we need gender and racial data on COVID-19:
Supermajority is a women’s equality organization, made up of women of all backgrounds, races and ages who are coming together to create a future where we are truly equal. Supermajority is connecting women with each other, and building on our collective power by providing the information, training and resources to take action.
We know that nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers in the United States are women, and women of color are disproportionately represented. These workers - caregivers, child care workers, cashiers, service industry workers, and cleaning staff - are at high risk of contracting COVID-19. Women are also 78% of the healthcare workforce.
Women, particularly women of color, are going to feel the worst of the financial, physical, and emotional toll of this crisis.
We’re already seeing reports coming from states and cities that Black communities and communities of color are being disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Women of color already experience medical discrimination, and are even more at-risk because of their disproportionate representation in essential jobs. We need data to understand the full scope of how COVID-19 is affecting women of color in our country.
